And relatively low strength gives you fairly low carry weight (at least until you take Lone Wanderer). Low Charisma means you won't have access to supply lines or the ability to build crafting benches. Low Endurance means you're a glass cannon, and low luck means you won't be getting many crits in VATS. The drawbacks to this setup should be obvious. One more point in Intelligence gets you overpowered robots. A few points in Perception will give you some pretty cool perks for a sniper. Another point into Strength and a few in Agility will let you go stealth/melee. While Perception and its perks aren't the strongest in the game, they're definitely fun to use for a sniper build. Plus you get some fun perks like Sniper and Demo Expert, as well as the ability to lockpick/hack. This setup gives you all the basics for a stealth build (high Agility, Ninja, Lone Wanderer) as well as some of the more useful perks for survival mode and just in general (all crafting skills besides Blacksmith and Robotics, which are only a point away. The +2 represents the Perception Bobblehead and the point from the Youre Special book, both of which you'll find right away. Personally, I would go with something like this for your starting stats: Plus Chemist is invaluable for early game survival mode. You'll want a decent amount of Intelligence, as some of the better late game snipers require Science. Companions tend to screw up your stealth attempts, so you'll want to use Lone Wanderer, and there's not much point to putting more points into Charisma. There's an argument for Aqua Boy/Girl though, since that will allow you to move around easier and avoid combat. Strength and Endurance aren't really necessary either, since you'll be avoiding confrontation. There's really no point in making a stealth build that doesn't use the Ninja perk. The higher it is, the better you'll be able to sneak (in addition to the bonus from the Sneak perk), and will give you more action points for running and shooting. With the maxed out Sniper perk, Better Criticals, and a decent amount of Luck you'll notice a pretty significant difference in your ability to engage enemies from range in VATS.Įither way, the most important stat for a stealth sniper (and most builds) is going to be Agility. However, if you do want to use VATS for sniping, there are plenty of good perks at the top of the Perception tree, and raising Perception itself will increase your VATS chance slightly. The best Luck perks are all centered around VATS, most notably Better Criticals which has no effect on non-VATS crits. Leave it at 1, and grab the bobblehead at the start of the game so you have access to the Rifleman perk. If you're fine with manually sniping and only really using VATS for your secondary weapon, then you can use Perception as a dump stat.
